Outline

Jig Design

A jig is defined as a manufacturing aid that guides a tool.

The term “jig” applies to a device used to guide a cutting tools (usually a drill or reamer). The term “fixture” applies to a device used to hold a workpiece, such as a welding fixture.
This section covers the design of drill jigs and reamer jigs.

Machine Considerations

  • Size and Rigidity
  • Capability and Accuracy (what variation will come from the machine?)
  • Accomodation of Workholding
  • Location
  • Compatibility with Tooling
  • Use of Standard Cutting Tools

Advantages of Drill Jigs

  • Minimize tool breakage
  • Minimize human error
  • Reduce cycle time
  • Improved accuracy

General Design Guidelines

  • Design to allow easy insertion and removal of the part
  • Allow clearances for adequate coolant flow and chip removal
  • Locate the workpiece properly (remember 3-2-1 principle)
  • Hold the workpiece adequately (toggle clamps, etc) Consider effect on surface finish, flatness, rigidity of the part.
  • Hold the jig in the machine adequately. Accomodate strap clamps, existing vise, t-slots, etc.
  • Guide the tool properly
  • See also Carr Lane Installation and technical data

Types of Drill Jigs

Open Jigs

Open jigs typically allow operations to be performed from a single direction. That is, they control placement of holes in two axes (X and Y) only.

There are a variety of open jigs:

  • Plate or Template Jigs
  • Circular Plate Template Jigs
  • Nested Template Jigs
  • Angle Plate Jigs
  • Universal Jigs (Reglus.ch)

Closed (box-type) Jigs

Box-type jigs enclose the workpiece, and typically allow operations to be performed from multiple sides of the workpiece.
