A common product produced by power presses is a progressive die stamping.
Two main types of presses
Gap-Frame or “C-Frame” Press
- OBI – Open-back inclinable
- OBS – Open-back stationary
Straight-Side Press
- Typically used for higher production volumes with higher precision required.
Mechanical Vs. Hydraulic
Mechanical
- Capacities to 6,000 tons
- Force varies throughout the stroke
- Limited/difficult overload protection
Hydraulic
- 50,000 + ton capacities
- Large force available at the top of the stroke
- Overload protection
How much is 50,000 tons?
GE AC6000 locomotice212.5 Tons (236 of these)
The Loewy 50,000 ton press during construction. One of eighteen columnar plates (circa 1954).
Rated capacity of a mechanical press is available only near the bottom of the stroke.
