Nickel Plating Lab

Pre-lab Homework:

  • Watch this video (including part II) bout the basics of electroplating.
  • Read this Safety Data Sheet for the plating solution.
  • Be able to identify the components listed below.
  • Bring a penny or small brass or copper (key-sized).

Clean the workpiece to be plated.  Surface MUST be clear of grease, dirt, oil, etc.

Notice in the piece below, the hydrophobic section did not plate properly. This is because of the presence of grease or oil.

  • Part to be plated
  • Source of nickel
  • Dissolved nickel ions
  • Anode
  • Cathode
  • Electrolyte
